Glossary
Concise editorial definitions of the project's terms, in Arabic and English.
- Biochar Biochar
- A carbon-rich material produced by thermally treating organic matter with limited air; its properties vary with feedstock and processing conditions.
- Pyrolysis Pyrolysis
- Thermal treatment of organic material with limited oxygen, changing its composition and forming a carbon-rich solid.
- Ophiolite Ophiolite
- A rock formation whose material the report describes using, from Samail in Oman, as a companion material in one formulation.
- Control treatment Control treatment
- A treatment with no amendment, against which other treatments in the experiment are compared.
- Biomass Biomass
- The mass of plant material, measured fresh or dry, each carrying a different meaning.
- SPAD SPAD
- An instrument reading used as a relative indicator of leaf chlorophyll status. It is not a chlorophyll percentage.
- SEM SEM
- Scanning electron microscopy, showing the surface morphology of a sample at high magnification.
- EDS EDS
- Elemental analysis coupled with electron microscopy, giving a reading at a specific point of the sample.
- FTIR FTIR
- A spectroscopic technique used to infer functional groups and bonds in a material.
- XRF XRF
- A technique for measuring elements in a sample, read according to the sample label and the specified measurement unit.
- ppm ppm
- A concentration unit meaning parts per million; it must be tied to the correct table and sample.
- ND ND
- Not detected: no value was observed above the detection limit. ND does not mean zero.
