About the project

A study of converting expired milk into biochar with companion materials, then characterising the samples and testing plant response.

Research question

How does cowpea response differ across the tested biochar formulations within the experimental conditions?

The question is read within the experiment's limits: one crop, pot soil, defined treatments, and a defined measurement period.

Objectives

  • Revisit the reuse of expired milk by converting it into a carbon-rich material.
  • Characterise the three formulations through material analyses.
  • Compare cowpea response across treatments within the same experimental conditions.

Scope and limits of generalisation

  • Results relate to a cowpea pot experiment, not a field trial.
  • The amendment rates used in the experiment are not a recommended dose for farmers.
  • No other crops, soils or climatic conditions were tested in this study.
